The Pack Train and its forerunner the caravan are rooted so deeply in our culture that it is almost beyond understanding. This is not only a US tradition, it is the way civilization began to exchange goods. The "silk Road", the "spice caravans", the "wool trains" of medieval Europe going to the fairs at Lyon, the convoys of the Venetians bringing spices to the Rialto, the "gold fleets" of the Spaniards carrying the treasures of Mexico and Peru to Madrid, the WWII convoys of food and arms without which the UK could not have survived are all part of the same heritage as our ancestors in the US driving west in wagon trains seeking the promised land.
